Are You Aware of Your Interactions with Others?

Your ability to better understand what others are feeling and why they are responding in a certain way is very important in enhancing your health and well-being. It goes back to mindfulness and staying focused on what is going on around you. By listening, observing, and becoming better at looking at a situation through someone else’s vantage point, you will influence how you will better manage your time together.

The next time you enter a social situation, observe others’ body language and the mood of the room. Look for things in the room you have never noticed. By being observant and sensing the dynamics present, you will be able to communicate more effectively, with less chance of creating an unwanted emotion, drama, or unhealthy situation or crisis.

How Do You Handle Your Relationships?

Your ability to develop and maintain strong relationships is based on consistency in communications and in behavior. Great friendships and relationships are not only highly desirable to manage our interactions effectively but are also associated with well-being.

In my book, Dr. A’s Habits of Health, I interviewed and did extensive research on people who live to be over a hundred years of age in great health. Among the most important factors are their deep, long-term relationships. You should seek and covet these associations and develop those precious relationships. That requires work and results from spending meaningful time, especially in times of stress. Casual acquaintances may be supportive under normal conditions but collapse in a stressful situation. Since modern life is full of stress, it is critical to manage stressful occasions. Your ability to be aware of and regulate your own emotions and correctly sense and understand your relationships will give you the best possible chance to correctly negotiate a difficult situation.

The next time you sense that a conversation is going to become confrontational, follow these steps:

STOP—CHALLENGE—CHOOSE

• What am I feeling? Why?

• Am I acknowledging the other person’s feelings?

• Am I being open?

• Am I giving advice or actually working to resolve amicably?

• Or am I letting my ego take over?

• Am I showing how much I care?

Developing your emotional control and managing yourself and your relationships takes time. But the payoff is very important as you seek to create optimal health. Your mind controls your body. You want your mind and your relationships to be “at ease,” not progressing down the path to “dis-ease.”

You now have the five core pieces necessary to make the habits of health a part of you.

In the next chapter, I will discuss how to fully integrate optimal health into your life. These elements will help solidify the habits of health as a part of your internal life every day. Just as the working parts of an engine make up the whole, these components of intrinsic desire and external action combine to help create a healthier mind and body.
